Regarding the CRIE

Mission

The CRIE is recognized by the University of Sherbrooke as a centre of excellence in research and equally benefits from an influence at the international level. Its mission is to foster research and training of researchers in the field of pre-service and continuing education of professionals in instructional intervention by adopting an interdisciplinary perspective.

The Canada Research Chair on Instructional Intervention, of which Professor Yves Lenoir is Chairman, is associated with the CRIE. The CRIE also works in close collaboration with the Centre for Research in the Teaching and Learning of Sciences (CREAS), directed by Professor Abdelkrim Hasni.

In 2007-2008, the CRIE and the Research Chair, among other things, consisted of :

- 22 regular members, professors-researchers, from the departments of pedagogy, pre-school and elementary teaching, studies in school and social adaptation in the Faculty of Education and the department of social service  of the Faculty of Letters and Social Studies of the University of Sherbrooke, as well as from the Department of secondary education and human resources of the Faculty of Sciences in Education at the University of Moncton.

- 140 master’s and doctoral student-members under the direction and co-direction of a professor-researcher, member of the CRIE.

- 60 associate members, Quebecers and foreigners from Europe, the United States and Latin America (Mexico, Columbia, Chile and Brazil).

- Scientific cooperation  conventions, notably with the National School in Agronomic Education (ENFA) in Toulouse-Auzeville, the Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Research in Didactic Education and Training (LIRDEF) of the IUFM of Montpellier, the Centre for Research in Education in Nantes (CREN) of the IUFM of Pays de la Loire, the research group Theories, Actions, Languages and Knowledges (TALES) of the University of Geneva, the National Conservatory for Arts and Trades (CNAM) of Paris and the Centre for Researches in Education, Training and Insertion of Toulouse (CREFI-T) at the University of Toulouse II.

Functions

The CRIE has as functions :

- to develop new knowledges and new approaches relative to instructional intervention in the area of teacher education by resorting to an interdisciplinary perspective;

- to regroup researchers working on the problematic of instructional intervention in professional education according to an interdisciplinary approach or perspective;

- to foster the development of projects common to researchers within the Research Centre;

- to establish relations of scientific and pedagogical cooperation with other groups and research centres, on  the national and international plan, as well as with environments of professional practice;

- to participate in the training of second and third cycle students by assuring them a supervision of quality, by offering them the possibility of participating in training activities of a high level and by involving them in research works;

- to promote the interdisciplinary perspective in teacher education in the various actors intervening in teacher education, as well as  in practising teachers;

- to offer the researchers of the Research Centre effective services in order to increase the production of their scientific productions and their productivity, as well as the development of their knowledges in the field;

- to facilitate the diffusion of results of research works of members addressed to the scientific milieu as well as to those of professional practice;

- to assist in the starting of new university researchers in research fields of the CRIE.

History

The CRIE originated from a small regrouping of professors, the Group for Interdisciplinary Research in the Didactics of Disciplines (GRIDD), created in 1991 around Professor Yves Lenoir. The arrival of new professors enabled the consolidation of this nucleus for the forming of the Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Research in the Didactics of Disciplines (LARIDD), recognized officially by the Faculty of Education Council in 1993. The restructuration of the LARIDD in 1997, led to the formation of the Group for Research on Interdisciplinarity in Teacher Education (GRIFE), to whom the Vice-rectorate in research granted, in May 1999, the status of Group of Excellence. The GRIFE became the CRIE in 2001, and it has been recognized as a Centre of Excellence in research ever since.

The last change in denomination adopted by members of the CRIE is without a doubt linked to institutional recognition, but also to the willingness to better bring to the forefront the research problematic that characterizes it : the interactions of didactical, psycho-pedagogical and organizational dimensions that are interwoven within teaching practices and teacher education. This change also allows it to better harmonize its research objectives with those of the Centre for Interuniversity Research in Education and the Teaching Profession (CRIFPE).

The general objective at the basis of the programme of the CRIE is the development of scientific knowledge aimed at producing a new and systematic knowledge of teaching and to foster the effectiveness of teaching practices in the school milieu thanks to a high-level professional education in which results of scientific research are integrated. Three research axes characterize it : teaching practices; practices aiming towards professionalization; collaborative practices.
